Cilda

Cilda, our Proyecto member who taught school in Guatemala for 12 years before coming to Fort Collins, found a way for children in her trailer park to grow their own vegetables this summer. The kids and their parents worked together to assemble three raised beds and to fill them with good soil delivered from a local supplier.

Read below to see what Cilda had to say about the experience.

From Cilda:

“The children’s imaginations ran wild from the beginning to the end of this micro- gardening project. For the children, these were new experiences, full of magical adventures that made them want to work. There were three children, their mother, my husband and I. We could see reflected in the children’s faces joy and tiredness at the same time. To see their enthusiasm for what they were doing was wonderful. Thanks to the organizations who gave us grants to buy materials for three raised beds with soil, seeds, tomato and chile seedlings, so that the children Sofia, Esmeralda and Michael could enjoy this beautiful experience they had at home. It was very exciting from the beginning to assemble the raised beds, then fill them with soil, then deposit in each space a seed in which they themselves with their little hands opened the hole to plant their seed so that a few days later they already saw the germination of the little plants of radishes, beets, squash, carrots, and celery. They planted a little bit of everything. It was a challenge for the children to get them to reproduce both because of the weather and also because of the insects that did not let some of the crops reproduce in their entirety. But even so they enjoyed every moment from very early in the morning. We took turns to be able to water and take care of the plants until they produced fruit. Thank you to God who blessed us greatly”
